Lamego from Porto: the Remédios stairway, the Douro valley and how to get there
Lamego, in the Douro valley about 110 km east of Porto, is best known for the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios sanctuary, reached by a grand baroque stairway of 686 steps. There is no railway station in Lamego: you go by car (about 1 hr 15 to 1 hr 30), on a Douro valley excursion, or by train to Peso da Régua and then bus or taxi (about 15 to 20 minutes by road). The climb is free and takes 60 to 90 minutes with the sanctuary and its terraces; the town itself (cathedral, castle, museum) takes half a day. These times are indicative: secondary sources consulted in October 2026, monument hours and prices to be confirmed.
Highlights

The Nossa Senhora dos Remédios sanctuary
A baroque stairway in nine flights, lined with azulejos, fountains and statues, climbing to the church at the top of the hill. The view over the town and hills repays the effort; you can also drive to the top.
The historic centre
The cathedral (Sé), the main street and its pastry shops give a good overview of the town in an hour or two.
The castle and the museum
The medieval keep overlooks the centre; the Lamego museum occupies the former bishop's palace and is a good indoor visit in bad weather. Hours and prices to be confirmed on site.
Local specialities
Lamego is known for its smoked ham and its sparkling wines: a tasting is often arranged at a cellar in the area.
