What to do in Porto in September for wine? Visit the Gaia cellars, spend a day in the Douro Valley during the harvest, and taste wines at WOW.
The harvest in the Douro
The Douro harvest takes place in late summer and September. It is when the quintas offer the most visits and the river is liveliest; see also Porto in September. Régua is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Porto by train or car (general figure, to check), so the festival works as a day trip.
Which option to choose
- The Régua festival: for the popular harvest atmosphere, free to enter.
- A Douro excursion: for a quinta visit, lunch and a tasting without organising transport; see the Douro Valley from Porto.
- The Gaia cellars: to taste ports all year without leaving Porto; see the port wine guide.
Practical tips
- Book accommodation early if you target the festival weekend: Régua is small; see sleeping in the Douro Valley.
- Check the dates on the official Peso da Régua town hall site.
- Do not drive after a tasting: choose an excursion with a driver.
