Weather and light in September

What to do in September

The Douro is the priority: a day with tasting, lunch at a quinta and a cruise is the most booked outing from Porto; see which trip to choose, or stay there (sleeping in the Douro Valley) to see the vines early in the morning. The exact harvest dates change every year: ask the quinta whether grapes are being picked on the day of your visit. In Porto, terraces remain pleasant: Ribeira, six bridges cruise, Gaia cellars. The Foz and Matosinhos beaches remain usable.

Events of the month

  • Grape harvest: in the Douro, from late August to October depending on the year.
  • Public holidays: none in September.

Prices and booking

Hotel prices drop compared with August but stay high at the start of the month. Book the Douro trip a few days ahead, especially at weekends. The Lello is booked in advance. Budget: travel budget for Porto.

What to pack

Light clothes, a jacket for the evening and the river, a light raincoat for the end of the month, comfortable shoes.
