With or without a car
By car, allow 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 from Porto to reach Régua, more for some quintas; do not drive after tastings, appoint a driver or hire one. Without a car, the Douro line train serves Régua and Pinhão (train Porto-Pinhão) and an excursion from Porto often includes a cruise and lunch at a quinta (Douro river cruise).
Sleeping on site
Several estates offer rooms among the vines, so you can taste without getting back on the road: see where to sleep in the Douro Valley and the Douro Valley by car. The general guide is Douro Valley.
FAQ
Do I need to book? Yes, especially during the harvest (September-October) and at weekends.
Can I visit several quintas in a day? Two at most, with lunch in between.
Are children welcome? Often yes, but confirm with the estate.
