When is the grape harvest in the Douro? Mostly in September; the 2027 calendar was not published on 30 October 2026.
What a harvest day includes
The typical programme combines transport to the vineyard, hand-picking with shears and baskets, a cellar visit, a tasting (often of port), a regional lunch and then foot treading (lagarada) in granite lagares, sometimes to music. Treading is still used for vintage port.
- Simple programme (picking and treading): about 70 € per person according to e-konomista.
- Full programme (visit, tasting, lunch): about 150 to 180 €.
- Booking: daily places are limited; book weeks or even months ahead.
Quintas open to visitors
The articles we read name Quinta da Pacheca (picking, tasting, lunch), Quinta da Avessada (a more affordable programme with picking and treading), Quinta da Gricha (Churchill's, usually open Wednesdays and Saturdays in early September), and Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Quinta da Roêda at Pinhão. The 2027 dates are not published: write to the quinta.
The harvest festival
The Festa da Vindima do Douro in Peso da Régua was announced for 18 to 20 September 2026 by an events aggregator (free entry, paid tastings optional): confirm with the town hall. See Peso da Régua.
From Porto, and where to sleep
The train from Porto-Campanhã to Pinhão takes about 2 h 15 (around 13 €); without a car, access to the quintas is limited (see the Douro Line train). An organised excursion lasts 8 to 10 hours. To sleep on site, read sleeping in the Douro Valley; for the rest, the Douro Valley guide and wine estates.
