What to ask, what to avoid
- Useful phrases: "Sou vegano" (I am vegan), "Não como carne nem peixe" (I eat neither meat nor fish), "Sou celíaco, tem opções sem glúten?" (I am coeliac, do you have gluten-free options?), "sem lactose" (lactose-free).
- To check: caldo verde and many vegetable dishes are made with chouriço or lard; pastéis de nata contain eggs and milk; the francesinha is a meat sandwich.
- Caution: coeliacs should mention cross-contamination (shared fryer and work surface).
Tours and classes
Food tours often exclude vegans: AtWill's and Food Lover Tour's list them as unsuitable, while the "hidden gems" tour offers vegan options if you say so in advance. The 3-hour Portuguese vegan cooking class, with meal and drinks, is listed at about 85 $ (October 2026). See also food tour in Porto and the pastel de nata class.
